It means that i put a link to one of your pages on my site... and you do the same with one of my pages...

Yes, link exchanges means sharing blog links or website links with each other.
the link exchanges will help in promoting the site, getting more traffic and an increase in page rank in future if placed in site with higher page rank.

Better to do link exchanges with sites of similar type of contents.

many of them provided a good info about the link exchage . acc to me it is...
if you want to promote your site and get more traffic u need some to do that job and some also needs u so exchanging helps you both of them.
