i would go for metallica, they are still the best heavy metal band as far as i am concern.

Wouldn't really consider Metallica a heavy metal band. The music isnt hard enough and neither is there image. I think ill go with Manson on this one.

Deff a rock band, not metal though. though remember there music was 60/70 and a lil 80's so what was rock then really isnt now.

There are different genre's and rock categories i would say, just because a band plays loud does not mean it is heavy metal, i am sure you knew about the different tags they use for rockers? few examples would be: Heavy metal, Glam rock, thrash, punk, and so on, so forth.
