I prefer PHPBB. They released PHPBB3 (Olympus) and match better than vBulletin, except it is too new that it don't have plenty of MODS yet.

Excellent and useful information.

I've been aware of PhpBB and MyBB so far. Hosting and bandwidth should be the important for starting a forum, I think.

I have installed an smf forum for my hosting company to provide support through the forums.
I don't have much experience with forum hosting. But i found it easy to set up smf.

see it here http://beewebhosting.com/support

I have used PHPBB 2 and 3 before, both of them work very well.

However, in my opinion all of the software are just too big and clunky. Some need to be smaller. For my personal stuff, I just need a forum that is small, has some basic stuff I need, so I custom design my own.

I also checked out BBPress by the creators of Wordpress. Looks great .
